What do I wear to exercise?
If you are new to exercise you may not know what to wear to workout, or think that you need to have special fitness clothes. If you want to buy designer workout clothes, there are many options. There are also very good cheap options available at places like Target, Big W and Kmart.
Technical sports clothing does have its purpose for specific exercises but is not essential for the beginner to spend lots of money on this type of clothing to get started.
In fact, you don’t need to spend any money on designer brands, you can usually find what you need already in your wardrobe.
Here’s my suggestions for workout clothes:
Top
An old T shirt is fine – a loose fitting top that you feel comfortable in and allows you to move.
Pants
Women – tracksuit pants or yoga pants, or any pants/shorts that are comfortable and allow you to move.
Men – tracksuit pants or shorts, that are comfortable and allow you to move.
Shoes
Lace up covered trainers with sports socks
The type of shoe you wear should suit what kind of exercise you do. A good fitting exercise shoe that supports your feet and allows you to move freely is important. Many sports stores sell all types of trainers and you don’t have to pay a lot of money.
If you have feet problems, or you are planning to run a lot of kilometres, then it is worth spending more money on a pair of shoes and being properly fitted by a shoe expert.
Having a good pair of shoes is probably the most important part of your outfit.
Women (or men) with long hair should also tie it up away from the face or wear a headband.
Really, that is all you need to get started – wear something you feel comfortable in and allows you to move without restriction.
